31st HARMONY FESTIVAL PRESENTS SOMETHING “KINDA NEW”:
LEGBA’S LIGHT “THE SPIRIT OF MILES DAVIS”
FEATURING DAVIS’ BAND ALUMS, JAZZ GREATS & CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS
Harmony After Dark, Friday June 12 and Saturday June 13
Sonoma County Fairgrounds, Santa Rosa, CA

May 16, 2009 (San Francisco North Bay, CA) — Celebrating 31 years of “Harmony From the Roots Up”—and continuing its focus on progressive ideals, community activism, and uplifting music—the producers of the Harmony Festival (http://www.harmonyfestival.com) are jazzed to announce a very special Harmony After Dark program honoring the spirit and music of legendary musician Miles Davis.

LEGBA'S LIGHT PRESENTS "The Spirit Of Miles Davis" will take place in Harmony Hall over two historic nights: Friday, June 12 (Doors 9pm, DJ/VJ Miles Davis Tribute 9:30-10:30pm, Legba’s Light 10:30pm-12:30am, ALO with Steve Kimock 1- 3am) and Saturday, June 13 (Doors 9pm, DJ/VJ Miles Davis Tribute + Charnett Moffett 9:30-10:30pm, 2 sets of Legba’s Light 10:30pm-1:30am, DJ David Starfire 1- 3am). DJ Tom Thump and VJ Missy Galore keep the beat alive before and after each set with mind-blowing music and heady visuals inspired by Miles Davis.

Vince Wilburn, Miles’ nephew, drummer and co-director of The Miles Davis Foundation, will be on hand Saturday for a special tribute to his uncle. Both nights will be recorded and filmed for a live album/DVD so come early and be a part of music history!

LEGBA’S LIGHT (http://www.myspace.com/legbaslight) features Mike Clark (drums), Airto Moreira (percussion), Mike Stern (guitar), Charnett Moffett (bass), Eddie Henderson (trumpet), Azar Lawrence (sax), Brian Jackson (keys), Vince Wilburn (drums), Kentyah Fraser (turntables), Killah Priest (rap/spoken word) and Missy Galore (visuals). This distinguished group of musicians comprised of Miles’ band alumni, jazz legends and contemporary musical luminaries will be collaborating in celebration of the creative spirit of the revolutionary trumpeter and composer.

Taking musical cues from such classic albums as Bitches Brew, In A Silent Way, On the Corner, Pangea, Dark Magus—music that combined elements of funk, rock, and jazz fusion and avant-garde—to create a musical style that remains way ahead of its time, the group will be performing original music, intermixed with new arrangements and contemporary re-interpretations of material from Miles' pioneering late 60's and early 70's electric-era work that sounds fresh and "kinda new", even today.

Opening the Saturday show 9:30-10:15pm will be veteran improv bassist Charnett Moffett and AOI. Moffett joins Harmony on his bi-coastal, multi-city tour promoting his tenth solo release, The Art of Improvisation (Motema). He is a seasoned veteran who has released a string of superb outings as a leader and has toured and recorded with some of the greatest innovators in jazz - Ornette Coleman, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Art Blakey, Wynton Marsalis, Stanley Jordan and Pharoah Sanders, to name a few.

From free jazz blowout, to raucous swing, to funky Middle Eastern flavored grooves, to introspective ethereal passages, Charnett Moffett pulls the very best out of himself and his fellow improvisers, always creating his own universe of singular sounds through innovative bowing techniques and electronic manipulation while seamlessly switch hitting to fretless electric bass and electric piccolo bass, both of which he plays to beautiful melodic and rhythmic effect.

"The bass is a machine and it has its limitations," Moffett states. "Believe me, I've tried to get things out of it that the instrument won't give. I guess that's why I got into the whole effects thing, because I'm always reaching for something else."
