THE ORB (1:30 am Saturday) virtually invented the electronic genre known as ambient house, resurrecting slower, more soulful rhythms and providing a soundtrack for early-morning ravers once the clubs closed their doors. Paterson's ambient sets incorporate a wide array of samples and sound effects, ranging from BBC nature recordings to NASA space broadcasts and special effects. With those samples mixed underneath the music of ambient pioneers such as Eno and Steve Hillage—and with his first recordings released in 1988 and still going strong—his sets have become popular worldwide. K’NAAN (11:00 pm Friday & 5:45 pm Saturday) In a country whose name is synonymous with strife, it's easy to brand Somalian K'naan with the "political rapper" tag. But this emcee is creating his own musical path through reggae, funk, pop, soul and above all, hip-hop. His sophomore album The Troubadour was recorded at Bob Marley's Kingston studio and released in January, 2009. It represents the sum of his life experiences in his homeland. For critics who have said that hip hop has nothing left to say, Troubadour proves that it all depends on where you look. ABAI (8:15 pm Saturday) is a talented, classically trained instrumentalist and hip hop vocalist, originally from Hayward, CA and the DC/Baltimore area. His most recent release, Multicultures, was on 12″ for Myka 9’s project Magic Heart Genies and has been recognized as a dance floor favorite. Abai’s live performance is a fusion of live vocals, DJing and instrumentation with an energy that combines the non-stop music styles of the DJ with talented live drums and keyboards and conscious vocal styling. NANDA (10:45 pm Friday & 1:15 am Saturday) fills the house with unrelenting skill and comedy woven into a sonic soundscape along with a tidal wave of dance, juggling, and crazy Kung-Fu acrobatics. The profoundly organic performance given by these four friends has been evolving slowly over the last twenty years, since the young gentlemen met as toddlers in their hometown of Port Townsend, Washington. Nanda began recording conscious hip hop mixed with the influence of Tribal backbeat from the desert sounds of L.A. moontribe and the forest sounds of Northern California’s 13 moon tribe in the late 1990s. Their name comes from the Japanese expletive used in reaction to something surprising or outlandish.
